A traditional choke is a constriction, just as the name suggests. When the shot charge and the primer are compressed, the cartridge becomes longer because it passes through a constriction and is compressed. When the hail cluster emerges from the barrel, it is up to 3 meters long (the length of the cluster from the last to the first hailstone). Some of the pellets may be deformed due to contact with the barrel, and some may be misaligned—so-called “edge pellets.”

In 1993, the founders of Patternmaster patented a new technology for choke tubes that produces much more effective shotgun shots. Patternmaster calls its revolutionary technology ”The Science of Shot.” Instead of using conventional narrow-bore drilling, Patternmaster’s choke tubes have 5 spikes at the front of the choke tube. The pins slow down the primer charge, and the shot charge is separated from the primer charge. The tightness of the drill hole is not controlled by the diameter of the choke, but by its length.

The result is a hail shower that is much shorter—less than 1 meter. The hail machine also produces smaller ring-shaped hailstones and fewer deformed hailstones. The advantage of a short shot length when shooting at moving targets is that more pellets hit the target because they all reach it at roughly the same time. If, on the other hand, the hail shower lasts a long time, the target will shift as the hail shower passes over it, and fewer hailstones will hit it.

Patternmasters has become very successful in the U.S. and its choke tubes are in high demand. Since the technology is patented, other choketub manufacturers cannot copy the concept and are stuck with the old technology.

Patternmaster choke tubes are by far the best choke tubes you can choose if you want as much of the shot pattern as possible to hit the target, whether you’re hunting or practicing sport shooting. When you hit the target, it will be with force and the maximum number of pellets.

Patternmaster’s choke tubes should not be used with slugs or Brenneke rounds.
